Wirklich Überragendes war unter den ersten fünf Beiträgen des ersten Hablfinals des Eurovision Song Contest nicht gewesen. Positiv anzumerken ist aber in jedem Fall, dass keines der ersten fünf Lieder eine dreiste Kopie des Vorjahressiegertitels ist – überhaupt ist die Abteilung “Ballade” im klassischen Sinne bis dahin nicht besonders stark vertreten. Auch die Tatsache, dass sich die Songs stark unterscheiden, macht Mut für die kommenden fünf Beiträge, unter denen sich mit Belgien und Norwegen zwei Eurovisions-Veteranen, mit Aserbaidschan aber auch ein weiterer Neuling finden.

	6. Belgien	Ishtar	O julissi na jalini	ESC- Teilnahmen: 49	bestes Resultat: Rang 1 (1986)
Infos zum Song:	Hier werden – und das bestimmt nicht ungewollt – Erinnerungen an “Sanomi” von Urban Trad, dem belgischen Eurovisionsbeitrag aus dem Jahre 2003 wach, als man hinter der Türkei Rang 2 belegte. Wieder ein Song in einer Phantasiesprache, wieder mit einer Frontfrau – allerdings fehlt dem diesjährigen Beitrag damit schon Einiges an Originalität. Statt folkigen Klängen wie vor fünf Jahren versucht es Belgien dieses Mal auf der musikalischen Ebene übrigens mit Caféhausmusik der 1920er-Jahre – oder Adaptionen derselben. Und das Ganze hat was – es wäre schön, den Titel wieder im Finale zu sehen und zu hören, wo er tendenziell sogar besser abschneiden könnte, da das Lied bei wiederholtem Hören und Sehen nicht unbedingt schlechter wird…
Hyman sagt:	There were some very good pop songs in the Belgian selection this year, and initially, when I heard this I dismissed it, thinking it wouldn’t stand a chance. However, after a few watches and listens, the song is good on its own merits, with mountain loads of charm and a very unique and interesting musicianship. It’s not the best song in the competition, and it is one of those ‘love it or hate it’ songs, but Ishtar could make a fairly good impression on Europe.

Infos zum Song:	Engelskostüme auf der Bühne, das kommt bei einem Konzert der Enfoirés richtig gut, bei einem rockig angehauchten Song des Eurovision Song Contest aber eher peinlich. Es bleibt also zu hoffen, dass die beiden das bis zum Halbfinale auch noch merken. Ob ein anderes Kostüm allerdings etwas herauszureißen vermag, ist zu bezweifeln, der Song ist einfach nur schlecht und kann höchstens über die obligatorische Trash-Quote auf einen Einzug ins Finale hoffen.
Hyman sagt:	If there’s a song that has been destined to stand out this year, this has been it. While it doesn’t appeal across the board enough to be a winner, the Azerbaijan entry will be one of the most eye catching and visually impressive performances we’ve ever seen in Eurovision, especially if the promotional video and national performance are anything to go by.

	8. Slowenien	Rebeka Dremelj	Vrag naj vzame	ESC- Teilnahmen: 13	bestes Resultat: Rang 7 (1995, 2001)
Infos zum Song:	Auf Slowenien ist Verlass – oder auch nicht. Verlass insofern, als sie erneut in Landessprache antreten, wieder eine Frau mit kraftvoller Stimme zu einer klassischen Eurovisions-Hymne (Version “mit Dancefloor-Beat”) ins Rennen schicken. Allerdings ist Rebeka sicher optisch ein Genuss und kann auch ganz gut singen – mit Alenka Gotar aus dem letzten Jahr kann sie es aber nicht aufnehmen. Der Song hätte von 1999 bis heute irgendwann aus irgendeinem östlichen (sprachbedingt) Land kommen können und wäre nie mehr oder weniger aufgefallen als heute. Chancen aufs Finale hat man mit so einer Nummer aber immer – vor allem, wenn die Tagesform stimmt. Richtig schlecht ist der Titel ja auch nicht – nur eben auch nicht gerade besonders aufregend.
Hyman sagt:	From I heard it, the Slovenian entry has been one of my faves this year, and it’s really not that hard to see why. Rebekah’s a great performer, providing a sound vocal on an upbeat, contemporary track, which should make a big enough immediate impact to pick up votes. I do think the song would be better performed in English though, this being the only thing that could hold it back. It’s not as good as last year’s attempt, which I think most fans have been quick to point out, but it’s still good, and I’m hoping that as one of the best songs in its semi, it should make it through to the Final.

	9. Norwegen	Maria Haukaas Storeng	Hold On, Be Strong	ESC- Teilnahmen: 49	bestes Resultat: Rang 1 (1985, 1995)
Infos zum Song:	Die erste westeuropäische Nation tritt mit einem Song an, und ist einer der ganz großen Favoriten der klassischen “Grand-Prix”-Fans. Auf all den entsprechenden Seiten findet man diesen Song weit vorne – doch Vorsicht: In den letzten Jahren haben diese “Favoriten” sehr selten reüssiert. Und auch wenn Hold On, Be Strong sicher nicht der schlechteste Song des diesjährigen Contests ist, so kommt er über ein “stört die Hausfrau beim Bügeln nicht” (Dieter Bohlen in anderem Zusammenhang) nicht hinaus. Ordentlicher Popsong – aber schon tausendmal gehört. Eine beeindruckende Liveperformance könnte hier was reißen – aber als Siegertitel wäre dieses Lied keines, das sich mit denen der vergangenen Jahre messen könnte.
Hyman sagt:	When I first heard this, I didn’t like it. Norway’s is one of the few National Finals I follow, and I never really caught on to why the Norwegian public liked this so much. (…) Well, after a second listen (…), I’ve started to like the Norwegian entry, as have many other fans seemingly, being one of the fan favourites to qualify from the first Semi-Final. I do like it, and Maria sings really well. The song’s one of the more contemporary sounding entries this year, and I think it will look good on the stage in Belgrade. It’s actually quite different which might make it stand out, however, it doesn’t contain that initial impact, so it could just as easily get lost among the competition in the first Semi.(…)

	10. Polen	Isis Gee	For Life	ESC- Teilnahmen: 12	bestes Resultat: Rang 2 (1994)
Infos zum Song:	Na also – kurz nach der Halbzeit wäre dann doch noch die erste Eurovisions-Powerballade am Start. Vorgetragen von einer – in jedem Fall – kraftvollen Stimme. Ob man die Stimme schön findet, liegt im Ohr des Betrachters. mir persönlich verfällt die gute Isis Gee bei der von mir gesehenen und hier auch verlinkten Performance zu oft in einen leicht jaulenden Ton, was dem Lied nicht unbedingt zuträglich ist. Wenn das bei den Auftritten in Belgrad anders sein sollte, kann das Lied weit nach vorne kommen, ansonsten sehe ich es eher im gehobenen Mittelfeld des Halbfinales – also als “Kann-Qualifikant”.
Hyman sagt:	Poland’s is another one of those entries that from the first time I heard it, I loved it, and I still do. It’s a brilliant, big Eurovision ballad, one of a major few in this year’s contest. Despite loving the song, Isis Gee’s live performance has always left a lot to be desired, with wobbly vocals; sounding like she warbles between singing notes falsetto and swiftly changing to belt – it doesn’t work for me, and in some cases, the woman sounds completely out of tune, despite her calibre, stage presence and experience. It’s a great song, but she really needs to get her act together and focus on changing her particular ‘singing style’, because I don’t think it will wash with the rest of Europe.
