Der Eurovision Song Contest 2008 ist – was das erste Halbfinale angeht, vom Niveau her ziemlich durchschnittlich. An diesem Gesamteindruck kann auch der letzte Block nichts mehr ändern, auch wenn zwei der stärksten Beiträge dieses ersten Halbfinales hier zu finden sind. Rock aus Finnland und ein Powerballadenduett aus Rumänien. Zumindest die “All Kinds Of Everything”- Umfrage verspricht dafür ein deutlich höheres Niveau des zweiten Halbfinales – denn die Punktzahl, die dort für einen Umfragesieg im ersten Halbfinale gereicht hat, hätte im zweiten Halbfinale nicht einmal einen Podestplatz zur Folge gehabt, sondern gerade mal auf Rang 6 geführt. Sollte sich das bewahrheiten, kann man natürlich nicht ernsthaft von Fairness in Bezug auf die neuen Regeln sprechen…

	16. Finnland	Teräsbetoni	Missä miehet ratsastaa	ESC- Teilnahmen: 41	bestes Resultat: Rang 1 (2006)
Infos zum Song:	Dass Finnland einen Rocksong nach Belgard schicken würde, das war von Anfang an klar. Und nachdem eine Gruppe mit männlichem Leadsänger den Sieg 2006 eingefahren hatte, die Solokünstlerin Hanna Pakarinen 2007 aber leider nicht ganz vorne landen konnte, ist dieses Mal wieder eine Rockgruppe mit männlichem Leadsänger dran. Allerdings singt man dieses Mal auf finnisch – und das kommt richtig gut. Bis dahin ist das mein klarer Lieblingssong dieses Contests – wenn ich allerdings die Umfragen ansehe, scheint der Bedarf der Eurovisionsler an Rock gesättigt zu sein. Leider. Denn finnischer Rock genießt halt doch nicht zu Unrecht Weltruhm.
Hyman sagt:	It seems, rather unfortunately, that the Finns have failed to realise that their victory in 2006 was down to the gimmick, great pyrotechnics and an all round impressive and different stage show – not the song. (…) For what it is though, I think it’s a good rock song, I just don’t think it will do well at Eurovision without any major gimmicks.

Infos zum Song:	Kurz vor Schluss des Halbfinales dann die zweite Powerballade des Abends – und was für eine. Natürlich ist das Edelkitsch, natürlich wird zeitweise richtig dick aufgetragen. Aber das Stück hat eine wunderschöne Melodie, ist rhythmisch durchaus nicht langweilig und wird von zwei Stimmen präsentiert, die perfekt aufeinander passen – eine männliche “lyrical”-Stimme und eine weibliche kräftige Popstimme – trotz tausender von Argumenten, die man sicher gegen diesen Song vorbringen kann, mir gefällt er einfach – er erinnert an ein Musical-Duett…
Hyman sagt:	Romania’s 2008 attempt couldn’t be more different from what we’ve seen from them in the past 3 years – with two very successful dance entries and a not so successful novelty entry. Despite this, their attempt at an Italian, nearly operatic duet has come up trumps and is a really good entry. Performed effectively with two singers and a pianist at the national selection, everything came across as it should and the focus was placed on the performers, who both sung beautifully. The song’s great – catchy and emotional, performed intimately by two very professional people.

	18. Russland	Dima Bilan	Believing	ESC- Teilnahmen: 11	bestes: Resultat: Rang 2 (2000, 2006)
Infos zum Song:	Nach dem zweiten Platz 2006 versucht es Dima Bilan nun also erneut. Beinahe hätte das aber nicht geklappt, denn er hat sich nur knapp in der nationalen Vorausscheidung durchsetzen können. Und kommt – wie der Startplatz zuvor – auch mit einer Powerballade daher. Die ist durchaus schwer zu singen, da hier der ein oder andere Registerwechsel verlangt wird. Man hat allerdings das Gefühl, dass diese Registerwechsel um ihrer selbst willen eingebaut sind und nicht dem Song an sich dienen. Irgendwie will bei mir da der Funke nicht so recht überspringen, auch wenn das sicher kein Totalflop ist. Und erfolgreich wird der Song sicher sein – da muss man sich nur Russlands Geschichte und den Status von Dima Bilan im ehemaligen Ostblock ansehen.
Hyman sagt:	Before I begin, I should start by telling you that I don’t like Dima Bilan. I thought his performance in 2006 was horrific, and it was a shame and disgrace that he made the runner’s up spot. I don’t think he sells a song, or sells himself very well, and I don’t think he delivers a good vocal (he didn’t in 2006 and I thought this year’s National Final performance was awful). His vocals are shakey, flamboyant and inauthentic. I don’t feel the song he sings and I don’t get how or why people consider him to be a professional. The song isn’t bad, it’s certainly a contemporary ballad, but I don’t like Dima’s vocal, in fact, I find it quite irritating.

Dima Bilan – Believing

	19. Griechenland	Kalomoira	Secret Combination	ESC- Teilnahmen: 28	bestes Resultat: Rang 1 (2005)
Infos zum Song:	Griechische Eurovisionsbeiträge waren in den vergangenen Jahren so vorhersehbar wie bayrische Wahlsieger. Wahlweise ein nett anzusehender Sänger oder eine ebenso nett anzusehende Sängerin, der oder die mit Ethno-Dance die Eurovisionsbühne bevölkert. Ausnahmen (Powerballaden) betätigten hier die Regel – aber auf Ausnahmen hatten die Griechen in diesem Jahr keine Lust. Mehr ist zu dem Stück eigentlich nicht zu sagen, außer dass Kalomoira zwar sicher nett anzusehen und -hören ist, aber beileibe nicht die Klasse einer Helena Paparizou hat.
Hyman sagt:	Is anyone bored of this yet? Greece have gained much support from the whole of Europe since the new format was introduced, but the best of their songs definitely won and it’s so disappointing to see them continue to try and send replicas of ‘what was’ a few years ago.
